A Recipe!!

Here’s my SIL’s recipe for Old-Fashioned Oatmeal Pie.

2/3 cup sugar

1 stick butter, melted

2 eggs, beaten

2/3 cup dark Karo syrup

1 tsp vanilla

1 1/2 cups quick oats

refrigerated pie crust

Mix ingredients by hand in order listed, blending well after each addition.  Pour into pie crust  and bake for 40 min @ 325.  If pie still looks “liquid” in center, cook for about 8-10 more minutes.  Let cool for about an hour before cutting pie.

And hey!  Look!  Pictures!!

The finished product!

I did put aluminum foil over the edges of the pie to keep it from burning, just in case you aren’t a frequent pie baker.  That would be a lesson learned from experience. Smile

Random Friday

Random, random, random.  I have lots of random information floating around in my head and my fingers are itching to get it out.  That doesn’t happen often.  Hence, the infrequency of my blogging.  So let’s go with a list, shall we?
1. My husband has been out of town all week long and it is SO good to have him back.  I love that man.  And I just don’t feel right when he’s not around.  Everything just feels…off.

2.  I stuck my finger in my eye last night on accident (don’t ask) and I think I scratched it pretty good with my fingernail.  It hurts like crazy!  It’s too bad I don’t have some cool story about it, but I think I was just going to scratch my face and missed. ha!

3.  We started kindergarten with Hayes a few weeks ago and he is doing so well.  The kid is flying through his math book, doing at least 4 pages a day.

4.  My little brother is engaged!  He finally asked his girlfriend of 4 years (5 years?) to marry him and they are planning a June ‘11 wedding.  That girl already has her dress and bridesmaid’s dresses!  Mine is in my closet as we speak!  It’s so cute and from JCrew.

5.  Did I mention my eye hurts?

6.  I really thought I’d get 10 things on this list, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

7.  OH!  Have you seen this blog? http://catalogliving.net/  It’s the blog of a lady who I think is an actor/comedienne.  She was looking at a catalog one day and laughing at the set up of the scenes and started making up stories about the people who “lived” in them.  Now it’s a whole blog and some of them just crack me up!  She uses a lot of Pottery B*rn.

8.  Here are some pics from the summer!

Around Here

Heard around the house lately:

Yesterday, while I'm Shredding (Day 7 or 8, first day of Level 2):

Hayes: What are you doing?

Me: Resting a second.

Hayes: You're not supposed to rest!! (He's heard Jillian say that.)

Me:  Thanks, Mr. Lying on the Floor.

---------------------------

Hayes, after doing 5 jumping jacks and lying on the floor for 7 minutes:  I'm dying!

Oh please.

--------------------------

We were playing Uno and I called him out for not saying "Uno" and he says, "Come on, Lady!"

--------------------------

Getting out of the car after being gone for almost a week:

Hayes: Home Sweet Home!  Sweet Home Alabama!

Um, yeah, we live in NC.

-------------------------

And just a little taste of where we've been lately:

Things I'm Thinking About Today

Some are random, silly things.  Some, not so much.  And a few pics thrown in just because.

--My 5 year old (as of yesterday!) was talking about a little boy who threw dirt at him and spit at him last night at Becca's softball practice.  He said, "I wasn't mad.  I just had on my regular face."
At first, of course, I laughed.  How funny is that?  My regular face.  Then the lesson started to come.  We'd just been doing a devotion using Resurrection Eggs.  Today was the dice, signifying the Roman soldiers gambling for Jesus' robe.  The devotion talked about Jesus praying for and forgiving the men who were making fun of him, beating him, and killing him.
So we talked about what you do when people are mean to you.  And how like God to give us a real life situation the night before!
Hayes had on his regular face when a boy was mean to him.  He didn't hit back, apparently didn't even get mad.  Wish I could say the same for my reaction when I found out. (I wasn't there.)
                   DSC06424

--Can't stop thinking about a neighborhood kid who was here when we were sitting down for dinner tonight.  With a very surprised look on her face, she said, "You all eat dinner TOGETHER?"  Yes.  "We don't.  Some of us eat at the table, some in the living room, some upstairs."  No judgement here.  I just can't help think of what they might be missing.

--I didn't watch Idol yet and I'm not sure I will.  I read BooMama's recap and it didn't seem like I missed much.  Should I watch or just skip it?
                 DSC06447

--Beth Moore's book So Long, Insecurity is rocking my world.  Anybody else?
                       DSC06455

--Eight days until girl's weekend at the beach with my bestie and our moms.  CAN. NOT. WAIT.  I need a vacation in the worst way.

Blog post ideas from an NBA game

                             image

We took the kids to a Bobcats game tonight.  We actually won the tickets at another game a few weeks ago.  The seats were supposed to be in the upper level, but hey they were free.  When we got there, we found out they were lower level, 10th row from the floor, right behind the Bobcats bench.  Sweet!  With new owner Michael Jordan sitting on the end of the bench!

So I'm sitting there, taking it all in.  I admit I'm not a big NBA fan.  I'd much rather watch a pro baseball game or even football.  And would always rather watch a college game of any kind.

Two and a half hours later there are all kinds of blog post topics running around in my head.  Here's some insight into my mind.

--The Lady Cats.  From the spandex to the knee-high boots.  To the not so great dancing.  And I know good dancing.  I've seen Making the Team.  These girls are not DCC material.

--A grown man (a father, no less) who took a T-shirt out of my daughter's hands. (Oh yes he did.  Holdmeback. HOLD ME BACK.)

--People watching vs. Game watching (guess what I did)

--How excited my kids get over a basketball game.  Very into it!  Learning the players names and asking questions. So fun.

--So cotton candy.  How can they charge $4 for basically sugar and air?

--What is it about St. Patrick's Day that can make an otherwise sane and sober 20-something woman break out the green short shorts, skin-tight tank top, green and white striped knee socks, some green Mardi Gras beads, and a rub-on shamrock tattoo and go out IN PUBLIC?

--Michael Jordan: How do you look the exact same as when you played at UNC? How?

--Beer in cups should have lids.  That way it wouldn't get spilled on my shoes.  Is it the 5 beers they had before they walked to their seat with the 6th one, overflowing and spilling on everyone they pass?  Or are all beer drinkers just clumsy and inconsiderate?  I don't walk around with my Coke sloshing out all over the floor and whoever happens to be in my path.  Just wondering.  Maybe a lid would help.  Or a sippy cup.

Bobcats won by the way.  I do know that.  Beat Oklahoma City Thunder 100-92.  Who even knew OKC had a team?

Blogaversary!!

I just realized that today is my Second Blogaversary!  Oh my how life has changed in 2 years!

Now I know I haven't been the best blogger in the last, well, ever really.  I mean, I've got 14 posts this year and it's March 15! ha!

But this blog has never been about getting lots of readers. (Obviously!) It started as an online journal of our lives, a fun and different way to record the exciting and the mundane events of this little family.  And as happens with my own personal written journal, it has it's season of neglect.  Times when I just don't want to write anything, either because there's nothing to write or too much to write.  Make sense?

I am, however, interested in who is reading the blog.  I know people read and don't comment all the time. (Hello Kettle, my name is Pot!)  Will you satisfy my curiosity and comment? Thanks!!

And in totally unrelated news, seriously, how cute is this?

Soooo.....

So, what did you do today, Jennifer?

Well, I'm glad you asked.  I paid for a new water heater.  For our house.  You know, the one that's ON THE MARKET.

I'm thinking we need to take the sign out of the yard and stay for a while to get some of our money's worth.  Take lots of hot showers and wash clothes and dishes all day.  But then the dishwasher will break down and we'll be right back where we started.

And then!  And then I come to my senses and am thankful to have water to heat and the money to replace things that break.

And although things don't always go like I plan or even like I want, I am reminded that I am blessed.  Blessed beyond measure and way beyond what I deserve.

How has God blessed YOU today?

Sometimes you're the bug....

You ever have one of those days?  I mean, one of THOSE days.  The kind of day that you just want to do over.  And it's not even noon.  I'm not the only one, am I?

And if I'm going to be honest, (and really, why wouldn't I, if I'm going to talk about it here) but if I'm going to be honest I'd have to say it's not even because the day itself has been so bad.

It's because I have been.

I've been grouchy, impatient, unkind, easily frustrated and just all around NOT NICE.  And the guilt over acting this way towards my children is immense.  Overwhelming even.  I'm talking a stand-in-the-shower-until-the-hot-water-runs-out cryfest over it all.

So it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out I didn't have my quiet time this morning, right?  But the cryfest sent me to my knees.  And of course my Father met me there.  God Calling for today said that He heard David when he cried out from the depths and that He hears me too.  Crying out from the shower.

I've asked for forgiveness.  Pleaded for help.  Apologized to my kids.

There are consequences though.  There always are.  My kids are grouchy too.  I set the mood in the house.  I made my daughter cry today.  THAT sucks.  (I know that is such a tacky word, but it really is the only one that fits right now.)  I see in their eyes that they are worried, scared even that I'm going to yell again.

And now I'm crying again because Hayes just climbed up on the couch beside me and kissed me on the cheek.  For no reason.  Thank you God.  I am so very undeserving of anything good, especially today.

I know His mercies are new every morning.  Maybe they are new every afternoon as well.

Who's read it?

Ok, who's read Crazy Love?  My friend Heather recommended it and I've seen it around, so I picked it up today at Lifeway.

Wow.  I'm only on p.42 and I've got to share this passage.

Worry implies that we don't quite trust that God is big enough, powerful enough, or loving enough to take care of what's happening in our lives.

Stress says that the things we are involved in are important enough to merit our impatience, our lack of grace toward others, or our tight grip of control.

Basically, these two behaviors communicate that it's okay to sin and not trust God because the stuff in my life is somehow exceptional.  Both worry and stress reek of arrogance.  They declare our tendency to forget that we've been forgiven, that our lives here are brief, that we are headed to a place where we won't be lonely, afraid, or hurt ever again, and that in the context of God's strength, our problems are small, indeed.

Why are we so quick to forget God?  Who do we think we are?

I find myself relearning this lesson often.  Even though I glimpse God's holiness, I am still dumb enough to forget that life is all about God and not about me at all. ------Francis Chan, Crazy Love

How good is that?  I mean I know that worry is wrong.  The Bible specifically says "Do not worry."  But I've never thought of stress in that way.

Really, how often do we use stress as an excuse for our behavior?  "I know I yelled at the kids, but I'm just so stressed!"  We wear our stress almost as a badge that reads, "Hey, look at me!  I'm stressed out!"  Like it's a competition to see who can be the most stressed.  Like it makes us seem so busy and so important and like we have so many things going on.

But doesn't stress, along with worry, do just what Francis Chan says?  Don't they just say that we don't trust God with our stuff?  That our stuff is too big for God?  That because we have so much to deal with (usually alone, right?) it's okay that we act ugly toward our spouse.  Or snap impatiently at the kids.  Or retreat into ourselves and not reach out to others who may need our encouragement because we've just got too much on our plates.

Oh that we could and would surrender it all, palms up, to the only One who IS big enough to handle all our stuff.  All our mess.  Oh that we would keep in mind that this is not our home and that we're not SUPPOSED to feel comfortable here.

It's all about Him.  And stress and worry makes it all about me.

I'll let you know how the rest of the book turns out.....

Lately

So I've had a love/hate relationship lately with the ole blog.  Well maybe not so much love/hate.  Maybe more like love/indifference.  Add to that the fact that I just wrote a post only to have my computer start doing crazy things and Live Writer closed down before I saved it and you've got me wanting to throw my computer across the room.

Ok, maybe it is love/hate with the computer.

I really wanted to pass along a link I found yesterday on JMom's blog.  I took the time to watch the video and I'm telling you, TAKE THE TIME.  It's the site of a wife and mom who recently passed away from cancer.  The video is her talking to a group at her church a few months ago.  It is inspiring and encouraging and just amazing.  I can't even tell you how blessed I was to watch it.  Just go.

"Cancer does not define me. Neither does being a wife or a mother. All these things are part of who I am but they do not define me. What defines me is my relationship with Jesus."---Rachel Barkey

Giveaway Winner!!

You all probably thought I was being a slacker about the giveaway, didn't you?  Well, I was!

Not really.  I left for the beach Thursday morning and just got home tonight.  No kids, no men, and NO internet!

I went on a ladies trip with a crazy bunch of girls from our new church.   Some old friends and some new ones and it was a blast!

So anyway, we did the drawing tonight (meaning I wrote the names down and Daniel drew one out while he was watching the Duke game).  And the winner is.......

MiMi!!!!!

MiMi is my friend Faith's mom and probably if you read Faith's blog then you read MiMi's.  She's a beautiful, sweet, godly lady and I'm blessed to know her in real life!  AND she loves Starbucks!

Congrats MiMi!  Hopefully I'll have the prize by tomorrow morning and bring it to you at church!  haha!

Happy Blogaversary to Me!

And only 3 days late!  Can you believe I didn't even know it was my one year blogaversary?  Only after I saw Faith's post on hers did I remember!  We started our blogs on the same day actually.

A year ago we were on our 3rd month of traveling to Florida with Daniel for work.  We were there for 2 weeks at a time, January through March.  It was fun, stressful, lonely, and an adventure.  We went to Disney, the beach, Spring Training, the aquarium, and the mall (A LOT!)  The kids and I explored Clearwater and Tampa, found local parks and playgrounds, and every Chick-fil-a in the area.

Looking back, it was a really cool opportunity for our family and I learned a lot about myself in the process.  And in the middle of it all, I decided to start a blog.  After calls to my buddies Melissa (who already had a blog) and Faith, I figured it out and started to blog!

There were lots of sarcastic comments and teasing from my husband (you're shocked, I know!), but now he at least reads it and even lets me quote him

This blogging thing is kind of an odd thing to do and has turned out to be way more fun than I thought it would be.  I've met people I never would have otherwise and been challenged and encouraged and impressed by even people I already knew.

So I'm sure I should do a giveaway, right?  I've never done one before!  Oh, the pressure!

Ok, how about a Starbucks gift card?  Anyone??  Just comment and I'll put your name in a hat and let one of my kids draw it out.  Cause I'm oh-so-techy and that's how I roll!

(And don't think because you're my real life friend you can't enter the giveaway!  I think you're about the only people who read this thing!)

It's Official. I'm old.

I've just spent the last 5 days with 5 teenaged boys and 1 teenaged girl.  And the verdict is.....I'm old.

I'm 36.  And I really do realize that's not THAT old.  And most days, I don't feel old at all.  I actually still feel like I'm in my 20s.

But this week I found myself watching Kanye West on Idol and fussing at him for not pulling up his pants.  I had never heard the song he was "singing" and felt very out of the loop.

Add that to the fact that said teenaged boys were laughing at the adults, (me included, whendidibecomeanadult?) for judging Kanye's clothing and song choices and you have a recipe for feeling like an old lady.

Oh and plus we totally watched hours of FOX News.

I have never felt more like my father.  Have mercy.  (No offense, Dad.)

Not me! Monday

This is my first Not me! Monday post.  I love reading MckMama's blog and these are especially entertaining.  She's a wife and mom and she's just getting real and being honest.  And cracking people up, one post at a time.

So here's what I did didn't do this week:
I certainly did not pay our car payment to the cell phone company last month.  And I did not just realize it last night!  And I did not get all red and sweaty telling my husband about it.  Nope, not me!

I also did not leave food in a crock pot all day and then discover at about 5pm that it had quit working.  Not me!  And then I did not suggest Zaxby's for dinner.

Finally, I did not leave the hair clippers bag out on the counter to remind me to cut Hayes' hair and then not cut it for 2 days.  Because I never forget to do things and NEVER leave sharp instruments within reach of little children.   And that DID NOT result in my 3 yr old getting hold of the scissors and cutting a chunk out of his own hair!  Nope, never happened!

Head on over to my charming kids to see what MckMama and everyone else has not been doing all week!

I can't think of a title....

Apparently I'm on a blogging break. I've been toying with the idea of closing up this ole blog. I'm not motivated to write lately but I really have a lot to write about!

I've been examining my motivations for blogging and I'm kind of at a loss. I find myself thinking about the changes in our lives lately and really, I only want to share them with face to face friends.

I fluctuate between wanting to pour my heart out and just wanting to write about how much I can't stand to hear Tatiana speak/scream on Idol. Where's the balance? :)

Basically I'm just in a blogging funk. Maybe I'll snap out of it soon, maybe not.

In the meantime, I'll be watching Idol and hoping Tatiana gets laryngitis. (Is that bad?)

I'm leavin' on a jet plane......

So in case the title doesn't clue you in, I'm in the airport. And our flight was supposed to leave thirty minutes ago. But no worries, people!

Cause I'm leavin' on a..... well you know.

My sweet hubby and I are on our way to the Big Apple! And the kids are at Nana's!

I've always wanted to go at Christmas and I'm just so excited about it!

And if you aren't doing anything important tomorrow morning, tune in to Regis and Kelly and you might see me! Well, you might catch a quick glimpse of us right before commercials anyway. Look for a bald guy!

And who knows I might win $250 gift certificate to Omaha Steak! Yay for red meat!
